LED Light BulbTesting: My main test was to replace a standard 40 Watt bulb, with the LED light bulb. I did this in the basement where it is nice and dark.
The LED light bulb does not come close to the amount of light of the 40W bulb. After researching this, it appears a 40Watt bulb produces about 450 lumens. The LED bulb, produces about 30 lumens. What makes the LED bulb appear as bright as it does, is its light is very focused. In fact, it is hard to stare directly at the bulb for the light hurts the eyes. If you are trying to light up a room, than an LED bulb would not be a solution. If you are trying to light a small area or back light something, it is a solid choice. Unlike the 40W bulb, the LED bulb is only mildly warm. Touching the 40W bulb after being on for some time will burn your hand. I will also note that unlike the yellowish light of a standard bulb, the LED light had a bluish tint to it. My second test involved plugging a lamp into the Seasonic Power Angel. The Power Angel monitors the Watts that the lamp is consuming. As expected the 40W bulb read at 40W, but unexpected was that the LED bulb didn't read at all. I don't believe the Power Angel can read such low settings. Conclusion: While the LED light bulb will not light up a room like a regular bulb, it does have an intense focused light. If you have any applications that need this kind of lighting, I recommend giving the LED light bulb a try. If you don't have an application like this, file LED lighting in the back of your mind. Home lighting with LEDs is a new concept and in the next few years we will see more lighting designs, brighter LEDs, and more color choices. If interested in the LED light bulb, I would definitely get them from Geeks.com. Every where else I looked had them from $10 to $30. I will also note that there is a 36 LED model from the same manufacturer, Vivid, that Geek's does not carry. I think this bulb might be perfect for applications like a reading light. Pros:
