SteelSeries SteelSound 5H USB HeadsetsDescription:
At first glance, SteelSeries SteelSound 5H headsets look like a futuristic themed set of full ear, enclosed cans. The headsets sport a black and dark gray color scheme. Both the headband and ear-cups are thickly padded though the headband's padding has a leathery texture while the ear-cups' padding has a felt texture. The headband is adjustable in length and each earpod is loosely hinged to easily conform to any head shape and size. To increase portability, the top section of the headband can be detached from the two earpod units.
Built into the left earpod is a unique pull out mic system. The teardrop shaped microphone is connected to a very flexible plastic coated, metal spring shaft. It can be extended out of the earpod roughly five and a half inches. When it is not needed, the mic can be pushed back into the earpod.
Also, extending out of the left earpod is a one meter audio cable. The end of the cable splits into two gold plated audio jacks: a pink microphone and a green headphone. At roughly the middle of the audio cable is a small control pod which is equipped with a headphone volume control wheel, a 3-step microphone sensitivity switch, and a shirt clip.
Included with the SteelSound 5H is a two meter, dual extension cable which extends the headsets' mic/headphone cable to a lengthy three meters. Also, since this is the version that comes with a USB sound card, a USB sound card is included. The very compact USB sound card features two color coated ports (one for mic, one for headphone). It is connected to a USB plug through a thick but unnecessarily long cable. A driver mini CD accompanies the sound card.
Installation and Software: Though the USB sound card can be installed on a modern operating system without any additional drivers, installing the included drivers is still recommended as it provides more options and features. Installing the drivers will place an icon in the system tray. Double clicking it brings up a modified version of the C-Media audio configuration program which features many options organized under 4 tabs.
The program includes the standard set of features such as a volume control mixer and numerous equalizer and environment effects. In addition, the program also features a nifty DSP (digital sound processing) option called Virtual Speaker Shifter. Ideally, this option can create a virtual 7.1 sound field from the SteelSound 5H stereo headset.
