When it comes to technology, almost everything is continually improving. The light bulb is no exception. From incandescent to florescent to LED, each leap in technology brings with it more efficient lighting – less power consumption, less heat, and exponentially longer operating life. Even within a certain lighting technology, said benefits are continuously improving.
Take, for example, LED lighting. Last year it took a LED bulb 36 LEDs to produce 72 lumens of light while consuming 3.6 watts. This year, a LED bulb with only 1 LED can produce 160 lumens of light while consuming only 3 watts! For this review, I will be taking a look at one of these new LED bulbs (courtesy of Don’s Green Store).

Packaging:

The High Power JDR Spot Light LED bulb comes packaged in a small carton box. The box displays pictures of the bulb at various angles as well as lists its various specifications. Inside, the bulb is held securely in place by a carton restraint.

Specifications:
• Power Consumption: 3 Watts
• Lifespan (projected): 50,000 hours
• Light Output: 160 Lumens
• Socket Type: E27 Edison screw base - 110v, 60Hz
• Dimensions: 2” (diameter) x 3” (length)

Description:
The High Power JDR Spot Light LED bulb is a MR 16 equivalent spot light. The MR means Mirrored Reflector and the 16 (1 = 1/8”) means the bulb is 2” in diameter. While the face of the bulb is 2” in diameter, the actual light window is only ~13/16” in diameter. The light window is made up of a diffusing lens featuring a tightly packed dimple pattern. The rest of the bulb surface is made up of an aluminum heat sink which helps dissipates the minimal yet existing heat from the LED when operating.

This high power LED bulb is available in the E27 “Edison” socket, which most light fixtures accepts, as well as the 2 pin spotlight fixture socket.
In terms of functionality, the High Power JDR Spot Light LED bulb is meant to be equivalent to a 20 watt Halogen MR16 bulb.

Performance:
Being that it is a spot light, the High Power JDR Spot Light LED bulb not well suited for lamps and light fixtures that radiate light in all direction. That pretty much accounts for a majority of lighting in a standard house. However, I found that this LED bulb does work nicely in reading lamps with metal hoods that focus light out of the lamp in one direction. The following pictures compare the High Power LED bulb to a 13 watt florescent bulb:

The 13 watt florescent is the lowest power bulb I have on hand for comparison. Admittedly, this is not a very fair comparison as the 13 watt florescent has an output rating of 800 lumens, compared to the LED bulb’s 160 lumens. The five times greater lumens output is the reason why the florescent bulb appears to be brighter.
One thing you will notice is how cool the LED bulb’s light output is. The light is the “whitest” light I have ever seen from a socket light bulb. Compared to the yellow glow of the florescent bulb, as a reading light I find the light from the LED bulb to be very comfortable. It reminds me of those expensive “natural light” reading lamps advertised on TV commercials and infomercials.
The LED bulb does get quite warm after a few hours of operation but it never gets hot enough to where it burns.

Conclusion:
For what it is, the High Power JDR Spot Light LED bulb is a very neat little bulb. Being a spot light, it is not well suited for standard household lighting (unless you have some kind of fancy multi spot light setup). One thing this LED bulb does very well though is it can turn a standard directional reading lamp into a white “natural” light reading lamp.
For those who do utilize spot light setups, I would definitely recommend this LED bulb as a replacement to halogen bulbs. Not only does it use less power for the same light output, the LED bulb lasts substantially longer. This makes changing the bulb a very infrequent thing which, if your spot light fixtures are in hard to reach locations, is very good news.
The only downside to the High Power JDR Spot Light LED bulb is its somewhat high initial cost. But, if you do the math, this bulb is definitely worth it in the long run.

Pros:
• Low Power draw
• Very long operating life
• Cool white light

Cons:
• Expensive

Overall:Very Good
