Logisys Alien Computer SpeakersDescription: One thing that shocked me about these computer speakers was the frequency response. According to the specifications, they can go down to 20HZ, which is quite impressive. How they sound while trying to handle this low of frequency, could be another story. Throughout my time of messing with audio components, I have found that speakers rarely can cleanly reflect their advertised frequency response.
As far as connection possibilities, the input hooks into the two RCA outs and turns them into a single 1/8" headphone in jack. Anything that can have headphones, like a laptop or cd player, can have connect with these speakers. If you wish to use regular RCA cables and plug them into the speakers from something like a DVD player or TV, it's more than possible.
Two places for RCA jacks. One set are outs to the satellites and the other is an input from a source. One of the things I didn’t like about the Alien Speakers, was the manual turn on power switch. Instead of being able to flip the switch and then turn the unit on and off using the volume knob, you have to actually flip the switch each time. That might not seem like much, but if you put the subwoofer in an out of the way place, getting to the back of it each time could be a pain. One thing I noticed about the sound, when the bass kicked in the satellites would kind of crackle under high strain. I think this is caused by not enough channel separation between frequencies, which causes them to go past the breaking point. Other than that, in my tests they performed well under all situations and are a quite capable set of speakers. For music quality of the highs were clear except for a little crackling. However, this is explained by the fact that the satellites are one speaker for midrange and high frequency tweeter instead of two independent speakers. This of course prevents the speaker to reach very high ranges without some distortion. The movie sound was nice and clear. Again the sound separation in the satellites was a little less than stellar. Also, the limitation of only having 2 speakers instead of 5 cuts more than half the sound effects out. For the price its near the top of my pick for speakers that handle all types of duties. Conclusion: So should you buy this unit? I've listened to value 2.1 speakers before that were more expensive than these and they didn't sound as good. Remember you are still dealing with two satellites. Things that use 5.1 won't sound nearly as good or have the depth that you could get from the surround speakers. However, if you're on a very tight budget and need better than stock speakers or you just don't want to use headphones, these are perfect. They are quite possibly the best bang for buck that I have seen and heard in awhile. I'll definitely use them on my laptop and small TV for that extra sound that can't be had with stock speakers. The only gripes were the lack of front panel power switch, the lack of a headphone input, and the stress the satellites seemed to go through with real heavy bass. Pros:
