Altec Lansing MX5021 Speakers (cont.)Description:
Altec Lansing's whole speaker system is black including the rectangular speakers which are enclosed in a plastic casing with the left and right sides rounded. A soft mesh grill protecting the cones covers the front of these computer speakers. Through this grill, the dual full-range drivers and horn loaded tweeter can be seen.
The top and back of the satellites have a polished shine. A gold screw "hot shoe" for using these satellites with speaker stands is located on the backs of the speakers. Above the "hot shoe" is a small screw hole for the included wall mount brackets. Spring clip speaker terminals on the bottom of the backside will make solid contact with the speaker wire. Of course, the satellites are magnetically shielded so they are safe to place near your computer or monitor. For those of you who have never had the experience, a magnetic field near a monitor will cause the colors of a monitor to bleed, which can lead to serious monitor damage over time.
The subwoofer is enclosed in a rectangular wooden housing with the front also covered with soft mesh grill. Wood is a great choice for speakers and especially for a sub woofer because it has more density than plastic. The denser the speaker, the less it vibrates which leads to a higher quality (clearer) of sound. This dense wood is 1/2 inch thick. Adding even more power, dB, is a port on the bottom of the sub. The single woofer can be seen through the grill. From the size of the cone, the
The control pod is made of polished plastic and is shaped similarly to the satellite speakers but with the top slanted and comprising of many buttons and lights. Located on the top of the control pod is the power/standby button; base and treble buttons and LEDs; and volume wheel and level LEDs. Below the volume wheel is the infrared receiver sensor.
The right of the control pod has a headphone jack and an auxiliary input jack. Great for when others don't want to hear you. On the back of the control pod is a rectangular slot for the wireless controller to sit in. The wireless controller has standby, treble, base, and volume buttons.
Testing:
A variety of music, as well as movies and games were used to test the MX5021 out. To describe these speakers in one word, WOW! These are some truly powerful speakers capable of reaching really high volume levels. Altec Lansing's satellites exhibit really clean overall sounds and the subwoofer dished out excellent base that's strong and responsive. The base and treble already sound good in their default settings, but can be increased or decreased if desired.
During movies, the dialogs were very clear and action sequences were absolutely amazing. Gaming with the MX5021 was no disappointment either. Gunshots and explosions sounded crisp, loud and strong though lacking the spatial presence that surround sound speakers provide. Overall, sound quality is superb. Conclusion: Though we associate multimedia speakers mainly with computers, they can be used other things. The Altec Lansing MX5021 make excellent computer speakers but they can also be used in conjunction with a CD or MP3 player to make a great sounding mini audio system. The included console Y adapter will allow these speakers to be used with a TV or gaming console. No matter what these speakers get used with, the bottom line is they will provide crystal clear and shelf rattling powerful sound. Pros:
