By now I am sure you know the importance of hard
drive cooling. After all, if the hard drive goes, all of your precious
data goes with it. Then there are the hours spent
getting another drive and reinstalling everything to get the system
back up. Though a hard drive will eventually fail no matter what
you do, proper cooling will help prolong that dreadful day. Hard
drive cooling, like CPU cooling, can range from advanced, water
and heatpipes, to simple, a fan. This review will
look at a simple fan oriented hard drive cooler from SilverStone,
the SST-FP53.

Silverstone's SST-FP53 looks like an exotic CD-ROM drive. The
entire cooler is made of aluminum with the top, left, and right
sides
about
3mm thick. Mounting holes are on the left and right sides. The
bottom is about 1mm thick. It features eight 12mm circle cutouts
that allow access to four screws that hold the two halves together
and four screws that secure a hard drive to the cooler.

The front of the SST-FP53 features a brushed aluminum bezel with
an infinity shaped cutout in the middle. Behind the cutout is an
aluminum perforated grill. SilverStone's company logo is
printed in black across the top left corner.

Unscrewing the four outer screws on the bottom allows the
SST-FP53 to be opened. At the front of the top half
is a 40mm 3 blade intake fan. The top side of the cooler can be
seen through the top side of the SST-FP53. Though not easily visible,
between the fan and the front perforated grill is a black foam
filter.

The bottom half (base) of the SST-FP53 features four blue
rubber washers, which SilverStone refers to as vibration dampening
pads. These pads have little pill shaped bumps on them. They
are designed to minimize vibrations from a hard drive; thus, reducing
the hard drive's noise.
