Finally, plug the USB cable and power cable into the enclourse.

The blue LED is either beautiful or annoying in the night depending on the person and activity of the drive.

Testing:

For the benchmark I will be using SiSoftware Sandra Professional’s file system benchmark.

The outcome was 21246KB’s a second for the external drive using a USB 2.0 interface. For comparison the drive tested slower than that of a 7200 RPM ATA 100 drive but faster than a 5400 RPM ATA 100 drive, both with 2 MB cache.

Conclusion:

The performance although affected was a lot better than I ever thought it would be. The drive led is a beautiful blue in the dark and kind of soothing after awhile. It was easy to attach the drive and use it while not affecting performance of internal drives.

The biggest benefit that negates any performance hit and inconvience of a drive sitting outside my case, is the ability to unplug it and take it with me anywhere I go. Some people have jump drives and flash memory adapters that use USB ports. For truly a huge files and fast transfers, the only way to go is hooking up an external hard drive to the computer. After formatting the hard drive for any Windows 2000 and above machine all you have to do is plug it in to an available USB port whether it is USB1.1 or USB2.0 and the drive automatically detects itself as removable memory. It's so easy sometimes I don’t see how I was able to cope without it.

Pros:

  • Ability to use without affecting internal drives.
  • Quick easy install.
  • Faster than most other external USB removable memory.
  • Ability to add a 300gig hard drive.

Cons:

  • Light may bother some people at night.
  • Not as fast as an internal drive.
