Looking for the best air cooler for your CPU? Thermalright has always been amongst the top air coolers on the market. Thermalright has given us the chance to test their new copper cooler, SLK-947-U. From its looks, like the other Thermalright products, the SLK-947-U is nothing short of excellence.

Specifications:

The U in 947U represents universal. This universal heatsink supports the AMD Socket A, and Intel Pentium 4, Socket 478, processors.

The manufacturer rated specs for the Thermalright SLK-947-U direct from their web site www.thermalright.com.

Heatsink Dimensions:

  • L96 x W86 x H45 (mm) Fin only, without fan
  • L67 x W81 x H45 (mm) with heat sink base, without fan
  • 570g (heat sink only)

Features:

Like most Thermalright coolers, the SLK-947-U does not come with a fan. From the perspective of, I paid $40+ for a heatsink, this is bad. From the perspective of, I can use any fan I want on this heatsink, this is good. I will let you decide where you stand.

The SLK-947-U supports 60, 70, 80, and 92 mm fans. Grooved into the copper fins are ridges where each size of fan rests. Two metal straps pull over the fan and secure it to the heatsink.

I strapped a 60mm Delta and an 80mm Panaflo to the heatsink. The Delta wiggled with a little bit of force because it does not rest perfectly in the grooves. The 80mm Panaflo fit tight and was held solid in place.

Originally, as seen in the picture above, I mounted the clips incorrectly. The fan is looser this way than when mounted correctly. The bend of the clip should fit in the fan holes. When this was acheived, the fan fit snug to the heatsink as if it were screwed in. The Delta still slipped a bit because it does not quite fit in the grooves but less than before.

As mentioned earlier the fins are made of copper. The fins are micro fins, very thin. Thin fins provide a larger surface area for air to flow over versus their thicker counterparts. The fins are welded into a solid copper plate at the bottom of the heatsink. The plate is very smooth and comes with a plastic sticker on it to protect it. Remember to remove this sticker before mounting.
