WinBackup Software (cont.)
Overview (cont.)
Other important features of WinBackup include the
ability to determine the size of chunks you want the backup file
to be partitioned into. This makes it easy to backup to zip drive
or other forms of media. Backup times can be scheduled to perform
backups when the computer is experiencing low use. Another important
feature is the ability to stop processes before running a backup.
This is important if a file that is to be backed up is part of a
process that is running in the background. The file you are backing
up could constantly change or interfere with the backup's ability
to read the file. WinBackup also works with CD and DVD writers.

Operation: Backup:
The WinBackup install file is about 1.5 MB. When running
WinBackup, it used from 10 to 35 MB of RAM.
Using WinBackup allows the user to select files to
backup or perform a full backup. The Search Feature enables the
user to search for a file or files that are to be backed up. Files
need only to be selected once because WinBackup saves the backup
job, so that the next time the files will not have to be selected
all over again. Notice at the bottom of the below picture, WinBackup
reports the estimated file compression size. This is a helpful feature.

I backed up about 800 MB of data to CD when using
WinBackup. The data was only a little under 400MB when it was compressed
and stored on CD. The status indicator tells the user how fast the
backup is compressing and storing files.

Once the backup finished I checked the CD where the
backup was stored. Not only did WinBackup store the backup file
on the CD, but WinBackup stored a copy of its executable there as
well. This can be help if a hard drive is lost. The user can just
run the executable program and start the restore.
