Xclef HD-500 MP3 Player (cont.)
Description:
Like most hard drive based mp3 players, the HD-500
has a rectangular shape. The majority of the exterior is made
of ionized silver plastic. At 129 x 81 x 22 mm, it is certainly
not the smallest hard drive player available; it is shaped
and
sized more like a PDA.

The front of the mp3 player features a 2.5" seven line LCD
surrounded by a mirrored border and further more by black plastic.
Below the screen are four buttons: stop, back, forward, and play/pause.
The buttons are arranged in a circle with the play/pause button
in the middle surrounded by the other three. Wrapping up the front
are four circle buttons at the bottom. These buttons are labeled
(from left to right) MENU, VOL-, VOL+, and REC/A-B. The REC button
has a dimple in the middle.

The left and right side of the HD-500 are covered with black ionized
plastic. The left side has an AC power port and a mini Type
B USB port covered with a rubber cover. The right side features
a hold switch and a jog dial.

out port. The bottom of the player is completely rounded while
the back features four rubber feet, which is very redundant since
the rubber parts do not extend out of the plastic surrounding.

Inside, the HD-500 uses a standard 2.5" laptop hard drive
for storage. The drive is formatted with a FAT32 file system. This
is why the player shows up as an external drive
without additional drivers. The fact that the HD-500 uses a standard
2.5" drive and a FAT32 file system implies that it can be upgraded
with a higher capacity hard drive, though doing so will definitely
void any warranties.
Accessories:

Xclef included quite a few things with the HD-500
which are all listed in the contents. The USB cable is used to
connect the player to a computer to transfer music and other files.
The AC adapter/charger is used to charge and power the player from
an AC outlet. The line-in cable is used to hook another audio player
to the HD-500 to encode its output into mp3s.

The carrying case is made of leather with soft windows for the
HD-500’s screen and buttons. There are also cutouts
on the front and sides of the case for all the player's features,
except the microphone. The case closes with Velcro at the back
top. Also on the back is a permanent plastic belt clip.

The HD-500
fits into the case very snug. The cutouts are
over roughly all of the mp3 player's features, making it fully
functional with while inside the case. For optimum quality voice
recording,
I do recommend removing the player from the case (or at least
open the top tab) since it covers up the microphone hole.

The included ear buds provide very good sound quality but are
very uncomfortable to wear. Each ear piece has rubber framing.
Foam
covers are included, for those who prefer them.

Finishing up the included contents are a user's manual and
driver CD that is only required if you plan on using the HD-500
with a Windows 98 system.
