BlueGears HDA Digital X-Mystique 7.1 Gold Sound CardSoftware: While a driver CD is included with the sound card, like any other peripheral it is recommended that the latest drivers be used. The latest drivers, both in 32 and 64bit, can be downloaded from Bluegear's site. Installing the drivers will place an icon in the system tray. Double clicking it brings up the C-Media audio configuration program which features many options organized under 5 tabs.
The first tab is labeled Main Settings. It is where you can choose between analog outputs of various speaker setups (from headphone to 8 channels) and digital output. Under digital output, in addition to the Dolby Digital Live 5.1 encoding, the X-Mystique 7.1 Gold can alternatively output PCM 2ch sound at various resolutions. Also under the Main Settings tab is a DSP (digital sound processing) option called Virtual Speaker Shifter, which as the name implies, allows you to virtually "relocate" speakers.
The next tab is labeled Mixer and features volume adjustments similar to the Volume Control of Windows.
The next tab is labeled Effect. Here you find a 10 band equalizer along with 12 preset equalizer settings. In addition the equalizer settings, there are also Environment sound effect settings (27 total).
The last tab that features options is labeled Karaoke/Magic Voice. Under this tab are microphone and music playback options tailored to help turn your computer into an effective karaoke machine.
Along with the driver applications, a few other programs are also included, such as a few 3D positional sound testing programs and a primitive media player. One of the included programs, called Play3D Demo, is particularly efficient at testing surround sound performance.
