Bytecc Backup Star One-Touch BackupSoftware/Configuration: Though the Bytecc Backup Star can be used as a standard external USB hard drive without any additional software, to fully utilize its function as a backup drive, the included Backup software will need to be installed. The included Utility CD includes the backup software as well as detailed PDF manuals that walk you through the setup, backup, and restore processes.
Bytecc's included software, appropriately called Bytecc Backup Star – Professional Edition, installs like a normal application with no out of the ordinary steps. It's interface is clean and simple. Bytecc Backup Star's main screen features a split screen design with a drive and tasks navigation tree on the left pane. The right pane is used to display information about whatever item is selected from the left. The Bytecc Backup Star works by making a 1-1 copy of whatever drive (either physical or partitions) you would like to backup. This means the drive you install into the enclosure must be at least the same size as the total size of all the drives you would like to backup. For example, if you have a 100GB hard drive in your computer and would like to back up the entire drive, you will need to install at least a 100GB hard drive into the Backup Star. If your 100GB hard drive is partitioned into two 50GB drives and you only want to backup one 50GB partition, then you would only need to install a drive of at least 50GB into the enclosure. Alternatively, if you have two 40GB drives (either partition or physical drives) and would like to backup both, then you will need to install a drive of at least 80GB into the enclosure. Backup: Upon the first backup, a drive initialization wizard will appear to prep the Backup Star drive to handle any of the aforementioned backup example scenarios.
Afterwards, a full backup will be performed. A full backup copies every bit of data on the drives you choose to backup onto the backup drive. Since the Bytecc Backup Star performs a 1-1 copy with no compression modes of any kind, the speed of the backup is strictly determined by the amount of data on your drives divided by the transfer rate (which will be discussed in the following section). Amazingly, it can copy all of the delicate Windows' files without the need to reboot into a pre-Window mode.
After the initial full backup, incremental backups can be performed. Incremental backups essentially update the backup drive with any changes made to your system's drives. Of course, this is substantially faster than full backups for only new or modified data will be transferred. Here is where the button on the front of the Backup Star comes into play. After all the initial stages are performed, whenever the front button is pressed, an incremental backup will be performed. In addition to the button, the Backup Star also offers extensive schedule options for automated scheduled backups. Multiple schedules can be made, each with user-given labels.
