PC2-5400 DDR Memory Featuring Crucial Ballistix, Kingston HyperX, and OCZ Gold SeriesDescription and Design: The Ballistix is Crucial's line of no nonsense, high performance memory modules. Crucial also has a line of "standard" performance memory and the Ballistix Tracer line of LED garnished memory. Each stick of Crucial Ballistix memory features a distinctive black PCB along with atomic orange anodized aluminum heatspreaders. To maintain the color scheme, the clips that hold the heatspreaders in place are also black. The Ballistix logo is tattooed in the center of both memory modules sides.
The HyperX is Kingston's line of high frequency, low latency performance memory modules. Kingston also has their famous ValueRAM line of value memory. Each stick of Kinston HyperX memory features a traditional green PCB along with blue anodized aluminum heatspreaders. The HyperX logo is tattooed on the center of one side of the memory while the Kingston logo is tattooed on the center of the other side.
The Gold Series is OCZ's line of enhanced latency, well priced premium memory. OCZ also has a Value Series of affordable memory, Platinum Series ultra premium memory, and Titanium Series of ultra stable server class memory. Unlike the Ballistix and HyperX which have aluminum heatspreaders, each stick of OCZ Gold features gold colored copper heatspreaders. The copper heatspreaders make the OCZ modules noticeably heavier than the other modules, about twice as much though not enough to cause concern. In addition, OCZ's Gold heatspreaders have a mirror finish that look very sweet but attracts fingerprints easily. Plastic OCZ badges are located in the center of both sides of the heatspreaders.
Installation: System memory is arguably the easiest computer component to install. For those who did not know, DDR2 is NOT compatible with DDR; it must be installed in a motherboard that supports DDR2. To install the memory, simply insert them into the memory slots making sure the gap in the modules line up with the notch in the slot. Since this is a dual channel kit, it is also important to make sure that they are installed in the appropriate slots so the dual channel is utilized. Each set of memory modules have their own rated speed, latency, and voltage settings. The BIOS may need to be accessed and configured to those settings.
