Razer Diamondback Gaming Mouse ReviewSetup:
Diamondback is an HID compliant USB mouse and as so, it can be used without installing additional drivers. However, a driver disc is included and recommended because they provide more customizable options than Window's standard drivers. An important notice comes with the driver CD which, among other things, mentions that all other existing mouse drivers (previous Razer drivers or other manufacturer drivers excluding the OS's own drivers) must be uninstalled before installing the Diamondback driver. Another thing the notice mentions is that the Diamondback requires more power than the average computer mouse; therefore, it should not be plugged into an unpowered USB hub.
Installing the Diamondback drivers will also install a program called the Razer Customizer which, as you might guess, offers numerous customization options for the Diamondback. The Razer Customizer offers standard options such as sensitivity level, double-click levels, scroll speed levels, and button orientation for the left or right hand. There are also more advanced options like function assignment for all 7 buttons and the ability to adjust the sensitivity of each axis movement separately. There is also an option for On-The-Fly sensitivity adjustment which works through an assigned button in conjunction with the scroll wheel. An optional on screen sensitivity meter can be enabled to give a visible reference to the mouse's level of sensitivity during On-The-Fly adjustments.
Performance: Just like the Viper, the Diamondback is a very comfortable mouse to use. The two oversized main buttons are superb and work wonderfully. If you were using the mouse with your right hand, the left side buttons are very easy to access with the thumb. Vise versa for using the mouse with the left hand. About the only problem the Viper had was that its scroll wheel has only 16 clicks per revolution. The Diamondback's scroll wheel is much improved at 24 clicks per revolution; going from click to click is very smooth.
The mouse's sleek Teflon feet work great with just about any surface, especially the speed side of the Razer eXactMat. Diamondback runs in an Always On Mode, which means the optical sensor and accompanying LED never dims. This means the mouse will never have "wake up" lag. The 1600 dpi sensor is immediately noticeable, especially at the highest sensitivity level as the cursor can travel across the entire screen with very little mouse movement. All the other fancy technical information about the Diamondback's optical sensor, such as its high speed motion detection (up to 40ips), frame rate of over 6400 frames per second (5.8 megapixels per second), and a 16 bit data path, insure the smoothest cursor movement of any mouse available today.
Naturally, the Diamondback performed superbly in all the games I tried with it; whether it was selecting and controlling units with in WarCraft 3 or aiming and shooting enemies in Medal of Honor and FarCry. The additional side buttons came in handy as they allowed me to use critical functions such as reloading and crouching on the mouse. The On-The-Fly sensitivity also came in handy as it allowed me to calibrate the Diamondback's sensitivity without having to go to the games' option menus.
For normal everyday mouse usage, Razer's Diamondback also worked superbly. Oversized main buttons make selecting and launching icons a breeze. Additional buttons can be setup to perform any task you want. The seven foot mouse cord also makes the Diamondback work with just about any computer/desk orientation. Conclusion: Razer has managed to out do themselves. Diamondback is a superbly comfortable and insanely accurate mouse. For any kind of mouse intensive game, Diamondback steps up and delivers big time with its two big main buttons, additional customizable side buttons, slick Teflon feet, On-The-Fly sensitivity adjustment, and an optical sensor that has twice the dpi as average "high dpi" mice. All these things carry over to all other computing aspects involving a computer mouse. If you feel like your current mouse is holding you back, then the Razer Diamondback is just what you need. Pros:
