Lite-On EZ-Dub External DVD WriterDescription: Lite-On's EZ-Dub is a black unit with a silver facing. The external case is made of a hard plastic with EZ-Dub is in silver lettering on the top. Also, on the top are two silver buttons. These buttons are for duplicating an optical disk or copying files to it.
The bottom of the EZ-Dub DVD writer has four rubber feet. This is so the device will not slide or scratch the desk's surface. This is good because when putting a disk in or pushing the eject button, the drive won't budge. The feet work very well.
The front of the device is like a normal DVD writer, all that is present is an eject button and a single light. The back contains the USB port on the left and a power port on the right. Pretty simple device if you ask me.
Installation: Lite-On's EZ-Dub is an SHW- 160P6S 16X DVD writer, this is the non-lightscribe version. I downloaded the firmware upgrade from Lite-On, but could not get it to recognize the drive. This worries me because firmware upgrades are essential with DVD writers. Firmware is what tells the drive to recognize new media and fix speeds so you don't coaster as much. While the compatibility guide says that the EZ-Dub DVD writer only works in Windows, it does work on other systems like MAC OS X 10.4.7 or Linux. The duplication and file copying buttons are what don't work outside of Windows because they take additional software. I originally tried the duplication without install the EZ-Dub software but it did not work. Thus, this means that the software needs to be installed on every system where these features are desired. Using the computer for storage makes sense because to copy a DVD that is 4.7 GB, 4.7 GB of storage is needed and the cost of an HD or Flash memory would really increase the price. Installing the EZ-Dub software is simple. Stick the disk in and it starts the setup program. There are really no other options than the path to install to. Once installed the Dub and File buttons now work. There is also an icon in the system try for Easy Dub, so it will take some resources. These resources are about 2 MB of RAM.
