Lite-On EZ-Dub External DVD WriterDub Usage: My first test was to duplicate a backup disk I had. I put the disk in and hit the Dub button. The files copied down to my system without a problem.
When done copying, a prompt on the screen appeared and the disk in the drive ejected. I put in the new disk and the program began to write the image back to the blank DVD.
It only took about 15 minutes for the whole process. That was pretty simple, I must admit. Next, the question on everyone's mind, what happens when you try to backup a movie using the Dub feature. I put my Matrix DVD into the EZ-Dub drive and hit the Dub button. Unfortunately, it displays a "Disk you inserted is copywrite protected" and will not let you back it up. This is kind of a bummer.
File Usage: If the file button is pressed on the EZ-Dub DVD writer then the EZ-Dub program appears on the desktop. Also, a prompt appears telling you what to do. Files or folders can be dragged into this program. Once all the files or folders that the user wishes to copy are dragged here, simply hitting the file button on the EZ-Dub drive will begin the copy.
To test, I decided to make an MP3 CD. As I dragged files over, the bars around the EZ-Dub circle filled up. There are different points on the circle that tell the user the size of a CD, DVD, or DVD DL. Clicking the Menu circle (bottom right), then Edit Label allows the user to change the disc label. It also allows the user to add and remove folders and files. Files and folders cannot be dragged into other files and folders. Unfortunately, renaming of folders cannot be done here either; I even tried F2.
Once all my files were there, I hit the file button on the EZ-Dub. The device started to initialize the disc. A few seconds later it was writing. Once the disc was written, I clicked the EZ-Dub icon in my system tray and then the menu. I clicked the finalize disc button so it will work with my car MP3 player.
The experience to copy files was easy. Unfortunately, there is no way to make an audio disc. There is also no way to retain the information. Retaining the information could be like a backup system. I tried looking in cache directory. Since it seems like the files are not written there for the file writing, I'm not sure how to create a backup system. To me the box is misleading for a one touch backup solution. I would want a way to backup certain files every time I touch the button. Nero 6.6 is included with Lite-On's EZ-Dub DVD writer. This can be used for the more advanced features like audio CDs and backups.
