Customizing Mozilla Firefox (cont.)Extensions: Because Mozilla cannot know everything you need in a browser, they allow you to install helpful additions. These are called extensions. Extensions can do all sorts of things from auto-populating forms, to managing tabs, to opening IE to view the current page you are on, to downloading all files at once on a web page. The sky is the limit.
Adding an extension is almost the same as adding a new theme. Using them can be quite different for they modify or add themselves to different places within Firefox. To install one, go to the Tools menu and select the Extensions. The Get More Extensions link will take you to Mozilla's page with lots of extensions written by developers. Click on one, then click the Install Now link. Internet Explorer offers some similar addons. Anyone who has deleted spyware has encountered the ability to extend IE. It is not all bad, Google's Toolbar is a great addon to Internet Explorer. As of right now, Firefox really does not have a spyware problem, but I would not download Extensions that come from strange places. If somehow you do, it is easy to remove them with the extension manager. Live Bookmark: We all know what bookmarks are, a saved link to a web page. These are static and do not change. While useful, what could you do if they changed. You say I want to bookmark a page and I don't want that to change or I would be lost. What if you had content on the page that changed dynamically, say news. Wouldn't it be cool if the boomarks could update to the newest stories? That is exactly what Firefox does.
I clicked the View menu and made my bookmarks appear on the left side. Normally, I hate this because it shrinks my browser window, but because of live bookmarks, I am learning to adjust. To set a bookmark, browse to a page that supports it like Yahoo News, Slashdot, etc... How will you know if the page supports Live bookmarks? An orange icon appears at the bottom right of Firefox's status bar. Live bookmarks use an RSS feed; therefore, you should be able to bookmark your favorite RSS feed to have it work if no orange icon is present. To do this, go to the Bookmarks menu and select Manage Bookmarks. Under the File menu, select New Live Bookmark. Create a name for the Live Bookmark and add the URL.
The newsfeed now appears in the Bookmarks side menu with each bookmark being a link to a new news story. So, you can browse the web and scan over to the left to read new news headlines. A click of a button and you are up to date on the world.
Remember that live bookmarks work on an RSS feed. This means that other things can appear besides news. If you wanted to, you could pull your Netflix movie queue or recommendations into your bookmarks; thus, providing an easy click for more movie information. To change live bookmarks, you have to right click on the bookmark folder and refresh it. A drawback if you ask me, but maybe there is an extension to refresh this automatically.
