Alternative Flash Based Portable Media Players: Kingston K-PEX 100 and Super Talent MEGA ScreenProvided By: Kingston, Super Talent The history of flash based portable media players is a rather interesting one. The first "mp3" players were flash based - albeit with storage capacities that are by today's standards, laughable. As hard drive and micro drive based players (which offered exponentially better storage/price ratios) became reasonable and physically compact, flash players became almost only a niche market. With sharp rises in capacity and steep drops in price, flash based players are enjoying a renewed popularity.
Naturally, as with most products when something is popular the big names are all over it. Apple has its Nano, Creative has its Zen V, iRiver has its Clix, and so on. As a consumer, going with one of these big brand media players is a safe bet. But for those not satisfied with what these big brands have to offer, players from lesser known brands are available as well. These often feature bargain basement price tags and/or unique capabilities. In this review, I will take a look at two flash based portable media players from companies that you probably would not think of when looking for a media player – the K-PEX 100 from Kingston and the MEGA Screen from Super Talent. What do these players offer and are they viable alternatives to big brand media players? Read on and find out.
