Alternative Flash Based Portable Media Players: Kingston K-PEX 100 and Super Talent MEGA ScreenDescription: At first glance, Kingston's K-PEX100 looks more like portable gaming system (ala Gameboy Micro) than a portable media player. Sporting a silver/black color scheme, the player has a flat rectangular "landscape" oriented body with a rectangular screen (~4:3 aspect ratio) in the middle, a silver D-pad on the left of the screen, and two silver function buttons on the right of the screen. Above the D-pad is a black button labeled Menu/Game Exit and below the D-pad is a black Power button. Two silver function buttons on the right of the screen are labeled Select and Esc. Below those buttons is a status LED. Below that is a black pill shaped Play/Pause button.
On top of the K-PEX 100 portable media player is a line-in port, a headphone port, and three rectangular silver buttons labeled Mode, Repeat, and Rec. The Rec. button has a red dot at its center.
At the bottom of the player is a hold switch and volume adjustment buttons. The left side of the player has a non-standard Mini USB port covered by a leashed rubber plug. Surrounding the USB port are two pinholes: one for the built-in microphone and one for a reset button.
The right side of the K-PEX 100 has a miniSD slot covered by a leashed rubber cap. A lanyard gap is located at the bottom right corner of the player. Finally, the back of the player features a single speaker.
Included with the player is a rubber sleeve/cover for the player. It fits snuggly over the player and features cutouts in all the necessary places to make the K-PEX100 fully function with the cover on. Also included are a pair of earphones, a USB cable for connecting the player to the computer, a USB host adapter for connecting USB storage drives to the player, a 3.5mm audio cable for line-in recording uses, a leather braided lanyard, and a CD containing drivers and Transcoder software.
Super Talent's MEGA Screen portable media player also has a thin rectangular body but is designed in a more traditional "portrait" orientation (ala Apple Nano) and is available in either a black or white casing. The front of the player has a square screen at the top and an array of control buttons below. The screen is framed with a mirror border and the control buttons are arranged in the shape of a paw.
At the palm of the paw is a circular Menu button nested inside 4-way navigation buttons. The top and bottom of the navigation buttons have + and – engravings, respectively. The left and right buttons have back and forward symbol engravings, respectively. The fingers of the paw are comprised of four round buttons which have (from left to right) FM, Lock, Record, and Play/Pause/Stop symbol engravings.
The right side of the MEGA Screen player has a non standard mini USB port covered with a rubber cap along with two pin holes: one for a microphone and one for a reset button. A headphone port is located at the bottom of the player. Super Talent's MEGA Screen features two lanyard gaps, one at the top center of the player and on at the bottom right corner.
Included with the MEGA Screen is a set of earphones, a USB cable for connecting to a computer, a 3.5mm audio cable for line-in recordings, and a mini CD containing driver and Transcoder software.
