Alternative Flash Based Portable Media Players: Kingston K-PEX 100 and Super Talent MEGA ScreenCapabilities: First and foremost, Kingston's K-PEX100 is capable of playing back a wide variety of audio formats. It can play mp3s as well as wav, wma (including protected), ogg, and audio asf files. However, it does not support subscription services. Further expanding the player's audio options is a built-in FM tuner.
In addition to music, the K-PEX 100 is able to display jpeg images and txt text files. The player is also capable of playing videos, though only its own proprietary format. Included with the player is a Transcoder program that can encode avi, asf, mpeg 1 & 2, and wmv files to K-PEX compatible video files.
Kingston's K-PEX 100 features two recording options. It can record from the built-in microphone or through the line-in port. Either recording method records files in wma format though in a user selectable variety of bit rates ranging from 32kbps to 128kpbs.
Not to completely dismiss its gaming system form, the K-PEX 100 is capable of playing game files with .sgs extensions. Two games come preloaded on the player though Kingston provides no information on where to get more games. Kingston's K-PEX 100 is available in 2GB and 1GB built-in memory capacities. In addition to the built-in memory, the player also features a miniSD slot for memory expansion (at the time writing, miniSD cards of up to 2GB are available). Furthermore, the K-PEX 100 is also equipped with USB host functions. With the included adapter, any USB storage device (such as USB flash drive or another media player) can be connected to the player. Kingston's K-PEX 100 can then navigate the connected device and copy/move files to and from the device to the player or directly play media files on the connected device. In comparison to the K-PEX 100, Super Talent's MEGA Screen supports far less audio file formats - being "only" able to play mp3 and wma (unprotected) files. Though the player can view pictures, it can only view pictures of certain dimension/format. A program called NxPhoto is included to convert jpeg or bmp images into the MEGA Screen supported format. The same ordeal must be done to get playable videos onto the player as well. Another included program called NXV Converter is included for converting video files of almost any format (asf, avi, mpg, wmv, dat, vob, and asx files are support) into .nxv video files of which the MEGA Screen can play.
As with the K-PEX 100, the Super Talent MEGA Screen also has a built-in FM tuner. Recording options include recording from the built-in microphone and line-in as well as FM recording. When doing line-in recording the headphone port is used as the line-in port. All recordings are saved in mp3 format in a user selectable bit rate. Beyond media playback and recording, the player features no extracurricular functions. Lastly, the MEGA Screen is available with 2GB or 1GB of internal memory with no way of further expanding storage.
