irock! 730i Portable MP3 Player (cont.)Features: For having so few buttons, the irock! has many features. Fortunately, all features were easy to access. The irock! 730i includes a memo recording system that is quite handy for meetings or recording to do lists. To record a message, select MODE to enter the memo mode, then press the REC button. The recorder worked well, but the built in microphone had a very limited range. The A-B button allows you to loop a selected section of music or voice recording. The HOLD button is actually a very nice feature. When the HOLD switch is in the on position, all buttons are disabled. This saves you the frustration of accidentally hitting a button and changing songs while you are running, working, etc. User options were accessed by pressing and holding the INTERACTIVE button until a menu appeared. This menu allows the user to change the backlight timing, contrast, equalizer settings, MP3i media type (images, text, or lyrics), repeat mode, mic mixing, and memory settings. When taking the irock! 730i to work or on a trip, make sure you take extra batteries. The battery provided by the manufacturer lasted only a few hours. I replaced this battery with a rechargeable battery, which lasted about 8 hours. What is an MP3i? MP3i fuses pictures, text, lyrics, and more with audio files. An MP3i can either be played back on a PC using a free jukebox plugin such as WinAmp or Media Jukebox, or on the irock! 730i. MP3i files are completely backward compatible with MP3s and use the .mp3 extension, allowing standard MP3 players to play the audio from an MP3i.
The irock! 730i LCD displays graphics, lyrics, or text such as biography or discography information. The text and lyrics are easy to read; however, the LCD screen is too small for the graphics to be seen clearly. The MP3i Creator software allows users to make their own MP3i files. I found it was very easy to create my own MP3i using the quick project wizard. After selecting the music file, I added pictures and selected the skin. The creator allows you to select certain pictures or groups of pictures at different points in the song, as well as add lyrics. Creating your own MP3i file, with lyrics, takes some time, but the users manual gives very detailed instructions to make the process easy.

A quick overview of the Quick Start Guide and you are ready to download music. The CD contains all the software you need for the irock!—plus some extra software for your computer. The ability to play MP3i files may be overkill right now, but look for this technology to become more popular as music downloading sites increase. I would recommend the irock! 730i to anyone looking to own a personal MP3 player with great features, without spending a lot of money. I found this player for as low as $90 on a Price Grabber search.
