BENQ 1625 16X DVD LightScribe Burner (cont.)Description: BenQ does not provide as much with their drive as the LiteOn's I have reviewed. I think this is because LiteOn gives me a little extra to do the review with. As for BenQ, you get a LightScribe CDR, BenQ Qsuite software, Nero Express, an instruction manual and the drive itself.
The drive facing is a very shinny black plastic. Other than that this is a basic DVD ROM with very few front features. There is a LED and a button to open the drive. No audio ports or volume control is present.
It is a bit longer than most though. About 1/2 inch longer than my Samsung DVD-ROM and about 1 1/2 inches longer than all of the LiteOn burners that I have.
Installation is very basic. Just put the drive in, plug in an audio cable, IDE cable and power plug. One thing to note is that the screws provided are too thick and do not fit the drive. Hope you have some spares. Software: Nero is provided and is a great burning package. I will not go into much detail here. The one thing I will note is that Nero Express does not support Lightscribe technology. Nero LightScribe is included to solve this problem. Of course, it didn't work at first, so I uninstalled my current version of Nero Express. Then the LightScribe installed properly.
BenQ provides their QSuite software package for an added extra value. The first screen provides info about the drive and any media in the drive. I would say the most important feature of this screen is the firmware version. You have to constantly update firmware on DVD burners so that they support new discs. Lightscribe is new; therefore, I imagine a lot of updates for these drives at first.
The Book Type tab is probably the most important tab. It allows for you to change the book type on a DVD disc. This allows for compatibility with older DVD players. I favor the way BenQ handles this over the way LiteOn does. Book type can also be set with Nero on this drive.
The QScan tab allows you to test the speed of your disc and drive. It is pretty basic and unfortunately only works with some discs. I got it to work with a Verbatim 8X DVD+R but not my 16X or 8X Ritek media.
The next tab is the WPOC tab. This is where if you buy the best media on the market or burn with slow speed -R media, you can turn off the Walking Optimal Power Control. This will increase burn time, but may result in poor burn quality.
The final tab is the Test Write tab. It allows you to put the drive in a simulate mode to test if burns will be successful. Some software does not allow you to do this so it is a handy feature. To me, a blank DVD is pretty cheap so I won't waste the time doing a test burn. Then again on the DL media at $7 a pop, you might want to make sure the burn will be good.
