Mapower KC-Series 5.25"External Enclosure (cont.)Description:
Macpower's KC51 is a smooth looking all aluminum enclosure. The top and bottom panels are iodized silver. Their left, right, and front edges have a slight concave curve. In each of the four corners on the top and bottom sides is a round hex screw. The hex screws on the bottom are plugged with small rubber plugs that act as the enclosure's feet. The plugs, along with the enclosure's horizontally symmetrical design, make the enclosure stackable with another KC51.
The left and right sides of the enclosure are a granite textured black and features numerous fins to help dissipate heat. There are no vents between the fins. The enclosure comes with a black aluminum mesh front grill which offers ventilation if a hard drive was installed. It can also be easily removed for installation of an optical drive. On both the left and right side of the grill are blue LED bars.
The back of the KC51 enclosure has (from left to right) a power switch, DC port, RCA ports, female Type B USB port, and a fan vent. Naturally, the USB/Firewire combo model would also have a Firewire port.
As mentioned, the top panel is secured at the corners with hex screws. An Allen wrench is included for removal of the screws. The edges of the screw head are textured like thumb screws so once loose, they can be loosened and tightened (more or less) without the Allen wrench.
While the exterior of the KC51 enclosure sports an excellent finish, the interior in contrast has a very poor finish. This is however only a minor issue since the interior will only be seen during drive installation. Located on the bottom panel are four small pins, which would ideally line up with the bottom mounting holes of an optical drive, holding the drive in place. At the back of the interior is a short IDE cable, Molex plug connected to a cable of generous length, and an optical drive audio pin cable. All are connected to a controller board. Mounted to the back of the enclosure is a 40mm exhaust fan. The mesh grill at the front can be easily slid off when the top panel is ajar.
A stand is included for using the KC51 enclosure in a vertical orientation. The stand has four rubber feet and can expand to fit the thickness of the enclosure. Also, included is a pair of 3.5" adapter brackets, which are used for installing a 3.5" hard drive into the enclosure. The necessary screws for securing the brackets to the drive are included.
Rounding out the included accessories is a standard black USB cable, a thinner than average AC adapter, manual sheet, and a driver CD for Windows 98SE and Mac users.
