Thermaltake Matrix VX Case
External: Thermaltake's Matrix VX aluminum case is available with either a black or silver chassis, as well as with or without a side window (total of 4 variations). The unit featured in this review is silver with window. Being the silver model, the two side panels as well as the top panel and the rim of the front panel are all silver with a dull matte finish. The front of the Matrix VX consists almost entirely of black mesh with minor silver accents. The four 5.25" drive bays are each covered with matching black mesh bezels. The mesh bezels allow any unoccupied drive bay to act as an air vent. In fact, since the front of the case is almost entirely mesh, it acts as one big air vent! The mesh metal also reduces the case's weight.
There are two exposed 3.5" drive bays. One located above the 5.35" bays and one located below, are also covered with mesh bezels. Located right above the top 3.5" bay are the front I/O ports. Rounding out the front of the Matrix VX are the power and reset buttons located offset to the left below the drive bays. Located below the reset button are the power and HDD LEDs. Rather than poking through, the LEDs are located behind the mesh.
The left side panel features a nicely sized window that is shaped like a square with the sides bulging out. The window is held to the side panel with black plastic rivets. Towards center back of the panel is a handle groove for easy panel removal. Adjacent to the groove is a square air vent. The bottom of the Matrix VX case has four round black feet. The back of Thermaltake's Matrix VX features the usual assortments. Both the left and right side panels are each secured with two thumb screws.
Weighing in at a scantly 3.8kg (8.38 lb), the Matrix VX is a very light case. It is almost half of the weight of comparably sized steel cases.
