Thermaltake TrueLight Memory Heat Spreader (cont.)Performance: Just as a heatsink will help keep the CPU and chipset temperatures down, a RAM heat spreader does the same for memory. Testing was done on a stick of SimpleTech 256MB DDR333 (2-2-2-5) on an AOpen AK79D-400 Max motherboard. Temperature readings were done with a temperature probe. The idle temperature was obtained by turning on the computer and doing nothing for five minutes. The load temperature was obtained by running Sandra's Burn-In Wizard (Memory Bandwidth Benchmark only) 10 times. Both temperatures are in Celsius and the air temperature entering the case was 28 - 29C. The results were:
The one degree difference for the idle temperature is really nothing to cheer about, but the indifference in idle and load temperatures is. Without the TrueLight, the memory had a 5 degree raise in temperature compared to the idle. With the TrueLight, amazingly, the temperature did not change from idle to load, or did not change enough for the temperature probe to notice! As mentioned before, the TrueLight has 8 different flash modes in addition to the "off" mode. Pressing the button on the expansion slot mode switch will toggle through the flash modes. Holding the button for 2 seconds will turn the LEDs off.
All the flash modes are pretty entertaining and will surely grab your attention if you have a case that allows you to see it.
Conclusion: While the memory’s operating temperatures are completely safe without heat spreaders attached, having heat spreaders does offer a piece of mind. In addition, it allows you to push your memory to its fullest while maintaining safe temperatures. The TrueLight is able to do all this in addition to adding some flash to your memory. With 8 different flash modes, there is bound to be at least one that suits your style or mood. As I have mentioned, the down side of the TrueLight is that they come in single packs, not pairs. If you can look beyond that, the Thermaltake TrueLight is surely one of the fanciest things your memory can wear. Pros:
