Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000Description: Taking the Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard out of its plastic wrapping reveals a very unique keyboard. The first thing I noticed was that a piece of plastic on the front lifts the front of the keyboard up, a 7 degree angle to be exact. This is unlike traditional keyboards that try to lift the back of the keyboard up. On this lip is Microsoft's company name / logo.
The front of the keyboard is also curved upwards. Each hand will rest on the proper side of the curve forcing them to rest in a natural feeling, open angle. The curve is a 14 degree angle. In between the curve is a gray piece of plastic where LED status lights are located.
There are previous and next buttons for navigation in music and other applications. Instead of hard black plastic, the wrist wrests are padded. They have a leather type feel in fact.
Keys for each hand are separated, a 12 degree split. The keys of the Natural Keyboard are also not laid out in straight rows. Each key is at a slight angle, curving horizontally. In the middle of the different key sections is a zoom button, used in newer applications. Each of the function keys are labeled to their common tasks. Along the very top of the keyboard is a row of silver buttons. These are common program buttons such as sound adjustment, Email, web and a much needed calculator. Also, 5 programmable buttons are present.
The bottom of the keyboard is nothing special. There are rubber feet to keep the keyboard from sliding. There is also a warning about proper use of the of a keyboard and the health risks from typing wrong.
The last item worth noting with Microsoft's Ergonomic Natural Keyboard is a green tag around the USB connector. It explains that the software should be installed before plugging the keyboard in. I wonder what happens if you have a fresh install and can't do this? Actually, I plugged the keyboard in, then installed the software as a test on my laptop. I didn't notice any problems. Of course, the software is not needed at all if the special key functions are not required.
