Xclef HD-800 MP3 Player (cont.)Description:
Though rectangular shaped, the HD-800 has a very different look than that of its predecessor. The majority of the player is plastic with a dark anodized gray outer rim (which makes up the top, left, right, and bottom) and sandwiched by the front and back plates which are a light anodized gray. With dimensions of 66.5x99.5x22mm, the HD-800 MP3 player is quite petite for a hard drive based player, shorter than the iPod, albeit slightly wider and thicker; thus, more voluminous overall.
The majority of the HD-800's face has a dark mirror finish surrounding the 2" LCD and four way control button. Like the back of an iPod, the dark mirror finish has a tendency to pick up finger prints and minor scratches. The slightly rounded, four way, square button has the play/pause at the top edge, stop at the bottom edge and the back and forward buttons at the left and right edge, respectively.
The right side of the HD-800 features a jog wheel, four light up function buttons, and a hold switch. The four function buttons are labeled, from up down: MENU, VOL+, VOL-, and REC. The left side of the player has an AC power port and a mini Type B USB port with a rubber cover.
The top of the HD-800 has a line-in port, microphone, and modified headphone out port. The back of the player features four small rubber feet.
Unlike the HD-500, which uses a standard 2.5" laptop hard drive for storage, the HD-800 uses the smaller and less common (though now more common in mp3 players) 1.8" drive. The drive is formatted with the FAT32 file system, which is why the player is shows as an external drive without additional drivers. Accessories:
Everything that came with the HD-500 is included with the HD-800. The USB cable is used to connect the player to a computer for the transfer music and other files. The AC adapter/charger is used to charge and power the player from an AC outlet. The line-in cable is used to hook another audio player to the HD-800 to encode into mp3s.
The carrying case is made of nylon with felt lining on the inside. Soft windows exist on the right side over the four function buttons. A window also covers almost the entire front. There are cutouts on the top, left, and right sides of the case for all the player's features, making the HD-800 fully functional when in the case. The case closes with Velcro at the back top. Also, on the back is a permanent plastic belt clip. The player fits perfectly into the case with each of the cutouts lining up perfectly over the player's features.
The included earbuds provide very good sound quality but are very uncomfortable to wear. Each ear piece has rubber framing. Unlike the HD-500, Xclef has decided to omit the foam earbud covers.
Xclef has included a wired LCD remote control with the HD-800. The remote is made of plastic and is very light. The top of the remote has two buttons (REC and MENU) and a scroll wheel (back, forward, play/pause). The bottom has another scroll wheel (VOL-, VOL+, stop) and a hold switch. On the back of the remote is a spring clip. A headphone out port is on the left side accompanied by the remote's wire.
Finishing up the included contents is a user's manual and a driver CD that is only required if you plan on hooking up the player to a Windows 98 system.
