Modular Power Supplies: Aerocool Turbine Power, SkyHawk Power One GM620, and Thermaltake PurePower TWV500WProvided By: Aerocool,
SkyHawk Group, Thermaltake Some time ago, a company called Ultra released their X-Connect power supply. What made this power supply special was that it was the first PSU to feature a modular power cable system. This special system helped eliminate unnecessary power cable clutter inside your computer by allowing you to only use the amount of power cables you need.
Unfortunately for Ultra, since the release of the X-Connect new power supply standards have arisen making it incompatible with the latest computer components. The good news for consumers is that many other companies have taken a hint from their success and have released modular power supplies of their own.
This review examins three of the latest modular power supplies in the market: Aerocool Turbine Power (550W), SkyHawk Power One GM620, and Thermaltake PurePower TWV500W. While each of these PSUs shares a few similarities, each also brings to the table something unique. Do any of them deserve a spot in your computer? Read on and find out.
Packaging: Each of the three power supplies comes packaged in fully colored retail boxes. Each box features pictures of their respective PSUs on the front, feature highlights on the back and specification tables on the sides.
While the outside of the packages follow similar protocols, with only minor differences, the inside packaging varies to a greater degree. SkyHawk's Power One GM620 has little internal packaging with the PSU sitting exposed in the box. The AC cable, bagged modular cables, and other included accessories surround the PSU.
Aerocool's Turbine Power is enclosed in a plastic bag and sandwiched between two pieces of dense black foam padding. A cardboard divider separates the PSU from the included AC and modular cables.
Thermaltake's PurePower TWV500W is the best packaged power supply of the three. The PSU is wrapped with two long sheets of bubble wrap. All accessories included with the power supply are enclosed in their own labeled black box. |
