Raidmax KY-550ATX Hybrid PSU (cont.)Interior: Raidmax's KY-550ATX Hybrid PSU has very large capictors and heatsinks. This an initial sign of good quality. Solder joints also looked very good.
As with all inexpensive power supplies, an EMI filter was missing on the incoming power. This would have been a good sign of quality. An EMI filter, filters out line noise.
A good plus of this PSU is that the fans are connected via plug in connectors. If you want to replace one of the fans, all you have to do is unplug the old one and plug in the new. This is assuming you have a two pin connector that is the same. Performance: A standard multi-meter was used to test the KY-550ATX Hybrid power supply's 3.3V, 5V, and 12V rails. The results were:
All three voltages were within the standard safety margin of 5%. The 3.3V has an outstanding deviation percentage. The 12V is pushing the safety limits a bit but is indeed within 5%. The low side would make me worry if using this PSU under harsher conditions, like those of a power user.
The three fans cooling the KY-550ATX Hybrid PSU are thermally controlled and for the most part, run very quietly. As mentioned, two internally mounted fans are equipped with LEDs which illuminate the interior of the power supply. This can especially be seen through the orange side windows.
At 450W, the KY-550ATX Hybrid is certainly not the most powerful power supply available today. Only 14A on the 12V line also makes it not powerful. A Pentium 4 can take 8 - 10 of these amps, while a high end video card can use another 2 - 5. Realistically though, for an average computer system, it is plenty. Even a mid priced gaming machine with a decent CPU and GPU and 2 drives will not require more than 450W. Conclusion: Raidmax's KY-550ATX Hybrid is a solid power supply. It is equipped with numerous visual features usually found on higher priced PSUs. While it is only rated at 450W, that is more than sufficient for the majority of current computer users. Overall, the Raidmax KY-550ATX Hybrid is a good choice for any one looking for a great looking, performing, and affordable power supply. If you are looking for a gaming system supply, you might want to look else where. Pros:
