SPX500 ATX Power Supply
The SPX500 has a fistfull of connectors. Here's the rundown: Auxiliary x1, peripheral x6, ATX x1, ATX 12v x1, floppy x2 and SATA x2.
What struck me immediately was the power strip on the back of the PSU, along with a 5v 3A DC connection. Unfortunately, no 5v cable was included (port is above the power in plug). Also, here is a lighted power On switch and fan exhaust vents. Overall this PSU is at the very least, feature rich.
I normally don't take PSUs apart for inspection, but this was an exception. I had to see that exhaust fan configuration. Nice beefy heatsinks and capacitors led me to believe this 4lb 6.5oz behemoth was built with quality. The squirrel cage fan design was the first of it's kind that I've seen, and hopefully it'll perform as stated.
The ratings sticker shows: 3.3V rail @28amps, 5V rail @45 amps, and the 12V rail @25 amps. Not a performer by any means, but good solid ratings nonetheless.
The graph below shows the power supply is well within the "allowed" 5% range, but a weak 12v rail leaves me wanting more. The voltages were unwavering when I used the power strip. The PSU ran ultra quiet and super cool, just as promised.
Conclusion: The SPX500 has a great design, and lives up to it's
promises of quiet and cool. However, the weak 12v rail would turn
me away in search of a more efficient power supply.
