Sierra Wireless Voq Professional SmartphoneIt's a phone: Sierra Wireless' Voq is a GSM/GPRS phone. This means it works with services such as Cingular and T-Mobile. The SIM card slot can be accessed by removing the battery pack. In my experience, though I have T-Mobile service, the phone reports it as Cingular. Nevertheless, I have no problems making calls and my phone bill does not show any irregularity.
Sound quality from both the front speaker (for hearing the caller) and rear speaker (for ring tones and other sounds) is commendably clear. The microphone picked up my voice quite well. Sound quality with the included headset was also very good.
Voq's reception for the most part is very good. Outdoors, the reception signal is consistently strong. On average, indoor signal strength is more than fair. In most of the buildings at the University I attend, the bars average between 3 and 4 (out of 5). Only when I am in the middle of the heavily cemented library or in basement of the Student Union, do I get absolutely no signal at all. For normal dialing of numbers, the numeric keypad's wide keys are a joy to use. Only the stubbiest fingers will have trouble pressing them. It took little time to get use to navigating the Windows Mobile interface with the thumb stick. Though the screen's 176 X 220 resolution is rather low, the default font size as well as all the various graphics look sharp and clear. When active, the screen has a fixed brightness backlight that is more than adequate indoors. Impressively, the screen is also superbly viewable outdoors for it does not wash out. On the contrary, except for glare, the more direct the light source, the brighter the screen appears. The Windows Mobile 2003 SE that is running on the Voq has a nice set of customization options. There are 5 home screen layout options including a Large Font option. The background image can be customized with one of he numerous included pictures or with any picture you want. Perhaps the best customization option is the ability to use any WAV or WMA clip as a ring tone.
