FSP Silent Solution Kit (cont.)Description:
The case and CPU fans have black frames with turquoise fans. The fans have thermal diodes that control the fan’s RPM. Seven blades are on the case fan while the CPU fan has eleven. A 92mm fan is great case fan because it moves a more air than an 80mm fan at lower RPMs. Unfortunately, most cases only have accommodations for 80mm fans. This is why FSP has wisely included a 92mm to 80mm fan adapter. We will note that the fan adapter will decrease the fan's airflow a little because the air is funneled from 92 to 80mm.
The heatsink of the CPU cooler is a combination of copper and aluminum. The bottom half of the base is copper while the top half and the fins are aluminum. The base features are something new to me. Though the base of the heatsink is made of copper, a small piece of aluminum is taped to the center where the CPU die makes contact with the heatsink. The strength of the adhesive that held it there gave me the indication that the piece was not to be removed. My only reasoning for this design is that rather than lapping the whole base, it is easier to just have a small piece of aluminum.
Machine lines are visible on the copper base while the aluminum piece is pretty smooth. This CPU cooler uses the always preferred 3 pin mounting clip. One end of the clip is hinged while the other is fixed. The fixed clip has a slot for a slotted screwdriver and the hinged clip features a thumb tab.
The power supply is enclosed in a purple case and is cooled by a single 120mm fan mounted internally on the bottom. The fan is honeycomb grilled, though not mentioned in the manual, features blue LEDs. This PSU acts as an exhaust for the rest of the computer by sucking air into the power supply and out the rear vent.
The back of the power supply is almost completely vented and contains a manual on/off switch and the fan’s manual speed control. When the fan speed is turned down to the lowest, the fan speed will be automatically controlled based on a thermal diode. A good safety feature for preventing overheating because a user might turn the fan down because of noise even though the power supply and computer is running very hot.
A mesh sleeve surrounds the motherboard power cable. Each of the six molex connectors features what FSP refers to as "smart housing." Smart housing makes detaching the connectors from peripherals very easy. By simply squeezing the two round tabs, the connector slides loose. One serial ATA power connector is also included with the power supply for those with serial ATA equipment.
