SimpleTech SimpleDrive External Hard DriveProvided by: SimpleTech While not as fast as internal IDE or SCSI drives, external drives are a faster solution than Flash Media, CD ROMs or other forms of portable media. They can also hold larger amounts of data. Since an external drive is going to be used as a backup or portable drive, it needs to be secure and robust. Another good feature would be quietness because this drive, more than likely, will sit on your desk closer to your ears. SimpleTech's External USB 2.0 SimpleDrive with "Theft Prevention Slot" provides all of these features. Let's take a closer look at their 160GB model...
Packaging: After opening the standard brown shipping box, I was impressed. No packing peanuts in this box. Air filled plastic packing surrounds the external hard drive. You will be hard pressed to damage this box during shipping.
Inside the retail packaging, the drive is held securely with card board cutouts. SimpleTech knows how to package their products.
Features: Listed on the retail box are the external hard drive's features. They can also be accessed on SimpleTech's web site.
Description:
Just feeling the drive makes one believe that it is durable. The outside of the drive is aluminum, very sturdy. Because of the metal, the SimpleDrive is heavier than other external drives. Included with the drive is a power adapter, feet, instructions (although pretty simple, basically plug it in), a USB 2.0 cable, a software backup CD, and a driver CD.
The feet can be mounted in all sorts of ways. They slide over the drive and latch into the divots. As you can see on the drive, this allows for horizontal and vertical mounting possibilities. Mounting both ways are very secure and the drive will not fall over. You would have to knock it squarely with your elbow to make it fall over. Neat freaks, take note, the feet scratch and mark up the side of the drive. The opening at the top of the drive in my picture is for the security lock. This is like the cable system used at Circuit City to secure laptops to the shelves. A metal plug goes inside the drive. A steel cable is then attached. This cable is fastened to something so someone cannot walk off with the drive. This security cable must be purchased separately from SimpleTech's web site. |
