Thermaltake Volcano Heat ExchangerHow It Can Be Used: The simplest function of Thermaltake's Volcano Heat Exchanger is to replace the waterblock of a current water-cooling setup. Doing so can potentially boost cooling performance, because the heat exchanger adds an additional radiator to the cooling system. Of course, installing a fan onto the Volcano could improve cooling performance even further.
Another way Thermaltake's Volcano can be used, rather than just as a straight forward waterblock upgrade, is as the foundation of a bare minimum water-cooling setup. The Volcano connected to a pump (ideally, one with a small reservoir built-in) is all that is needed for simple water-cooling. Naturally with this setup, installing a fan onto the heat exchanger is a must. Installation: The included user manual offers great instructions on installing the Volcano on various CPU types. The following is just a brief highlight of the key installation steps.
Installing the Thermaltake Volcano Heat Exchanger is very much like installing a heatpipe heatsink. For most CPU types, installation will involve removing the motherboard from the case to install the back support bracket. The only exception is on certain AMD K8 motherboards that have a steel back plate. Even then, I highly recommend removing the motherboard from the case as the design of the Volcano makes it nearly impossible to reach and secure the necessary screws while inside a case. Of course, thermal paste (the included or otherwise) should be applied to the CPU prior to mounting the waterblock. If you plan on installing a fan onto the heat exchanger, I suggest installing it first before mounting the Volcano to the motherboard.
After the Volcano is mounted, it needs to be connected to the rest of a water-cooling system. This process is quite easy as it only involves attaching the quick install connectors onto your water-cooling system's inlet and outlet tubes. Then connect them to the Volcano. Rubber O-rings on the quick install connectors insure a leak proof connection with the Volcano.
