Thermaltake Volcano Heat ExchangerProvided By: Thermaltake One of the many great aspects of water-cooling is the potential for greater cooling performance. Whereas with a fan and heatsink cooler, the only way to improve its cooling performance, short of replacing the entire unit, is to replace the fan with a faster one. With water-cooling, practically any of its core components can be replaced to boost cooling performance. Just how practical a replacement is depends on the water-cooling setup. For example, replacing the pump and/or the radiator of an internal water-cooling kit is much easier than that of an external cooling unit. Despite the diversity, there is one key component that is replaceable on any legitimate water-cooling setup – the waterblock. Because the waterblock has to be installed onto the CPU, it has to be a separate component even with an external cooling unit. The function of the waterblock, though important, is quite singular. It absorbs heat from the CPU so that the liquid flowing through the cooling system can efficiently dissipate it. The waterblock does not however participate in cooling the liquid down. While that may be enough for most people, Thermaltake saw an opportunity to further boost water-cooling performance by designing a waterblock that takes part in cooling the liquid. The result of their effort is the Volcano Heat Exchanger. Just what is a heat exchanger and how much can it improve water-cooling performance? Read on and find out.
