Titan Vanessa S-Type Heatpipe Heatsink (cont.)Description:
Overall, the Vanessa S-Type incorporates the heatpipe "tower" design which consists of a solid base connected to the bottom of multiple U shaped heatpipes. The heatpipe ends go through numerous uniform fins. To spice things up, the Vanessa uses butterfly shaped fins. Each of the 45 fins is made of aluminum to help keep the overall weight of the cooler down. The top fin is decorated with a colorful sticker.
Titan's Vanessa S-Type features three shiny silver heatpipes. Each of the six ends are covered with a blue rubber cap. The base of the heatsink, though said to be copper, has the same silver tint as the heatpipes and fins. A clear sticker protects the superb mirror quality lap job.
A plastic 92mm fan that comes with the Vanessa S-Type. Even though it has no LEDs, it is visually appealing for it has an anodized finish that gives it a metallic look. The fan frame is a shinny metallic blue while the fan is matte silver. Mounted to the intake side of the fan is a standard fan grill. Also, attached to the fan is a set of clips. Instead of being screwed to the heatsink, the fan clips onto designated notches on the Vanessa S-Type. Only one side of the heatsink is notched, so only one fan can be attached.
Included with the heatsink and fan is a fan speed controller which is pre-installed in a brushed aluminum 3.5" drive bay bezel.
Alternatively, a special expansion slot cover is included. It can accommodate the fan controller if that is preferred.
Lastly, a tube of Titan's own Nano blue thermal grease, colored Easy Installation poster, and all the necessary mounting brackets and screws are included for installing the Vanessa S-Type to all the latest available CPU socket types.
Installation: Very good clearance exists from the bottom most fin to the base, providing great compatibility with just about any motherboard because there is no need for a large amount of clearance around the CPU. In addition, the clearance allows for the cooler to be used with an assortment of mounting brackets and clips for universal compatibility for all the latest socket types. However, the overall height of the heatsink (144mm) presents possible incompatibilities with certain cases. I would estimate that any case which cannot accommodate at least a 92mm rear exhaust fan will not be able to fit this cooler. This basically eliminates any HTPC case.
For AMD users (socket A, 754, 939, and 940), installation will not require removing the motherboard for the Vanessa S-Type's retention clips work with the stock retention modules. For Intel users (socket 478 and 775), the stock retention frame will need to be removed and the motherboard will need to be taken out of the case to install the back plates.
For any CPU type, be sure to apply some thermal compound first (either the included Nano Blue thermal grease or otherwise) before securing the heatsink. Because the Vanessa S-Type uses fan clips instead of screws for the fan, the fan can be easily attached before or after installing the heatsink. The fan uses a standard 3-pin fan connector, so it can be connected to any fan controller of choice. If one decides to use the included fan controller, then you would have the choice of installing it in either an available 3.5" drive bay or expansion slot. Either way will require some minor additional installation steps. Make sure after installing it in either position to make the necessary connection to the fan and motherboard.
