Toodis Mpal 400 Ultra Compact AV Player (cont.)Description:
The Mpal 400 has a rectangular form similar to a candy bar style cell phone. The majority of the casing is pearl white plastic with a dark gray strip on the left and right sides. The front of the player features a 1.8" LCD screen; vertically oriented and surrounded by dark mirror finish. Below the screen are all the control buttons. The volume +/- and FF/RW buttons form a circle around the Menu button. To the left of the circle are the play/stop (pause) and A-B buttons. To the right of the circle are the stop/record and SRS/EQ/capture buttons. The back of the Mpal 400 has a semi cylindrical bulge. The top of this bulge is the battery cover which slides off to reveal the single AA battery compartment.
The right side of the Mpal 400 features a hold switch and a flip door which flips open to reveal a mini Type B USB port and a line-in port. The top of the player has an earphone jack, microphone, and a necklace strap groove.
The included case features a clear soft window in the front with a circular cutout towards the bottom for the Mpal 400's circle arranged buttons. The top and right sides also have cutouts. With the exception of changing batteries, the player is fully functional and accessible when inside the case.
The included earbuds feature white wires and hammer/ax shaped ear pods. Also, included is a leather necklace for wearing the Mpal 400 around the neck.
Interface: Windows users (and that's A LOT of people) will find the Mpal 400's interface to be very familiar and easy to navigate. The player uses a mini Window styled operating system called Mpal OS (1.0), which among other things features an icon laden desktop, a taskbar, and a slow (~ 8 sec) boot up time during which a series of initialization and loading lines are displayed. Pushing the play button turns on the player.
The desktop features 6 icons, Music, Photo, FM, Game, Movie, and Control. Navigation through the interface is done via the circle forming buttons and the play button is used to enter the selection.
The Music icon launches the Music Player. The top half of the screen has a striking resemblance to Winamp while the bottom half displays the scrolling ID3 tag information. The Photo icon launches the Navigator explorer with all the picture files in the Photo folder listed. To view a picture, simply select it and push play.
The FM icon launches a simple to use FM tuner. The Game icon launches which ever game is installed. Currently, only the game Hexa is installed. Hexa is a color block matching Tetris style game.
The Movie button launches the Movie Player which has no interface; the movie takes up the whole screen. Finally, the Control icon launches the control window which is where all the settings of the Mpal 400 can be adjusted. These settings are backlight, contrast, desktop wallpaper, languages and numerous other things.
An alternate way to navigate the various applications of the Mpal 400 is by pushing the Menu button which will bring up the Mpal OS's equivalent of the Start menu. There are two ways to turn off the player, either push the Menu button and scroll down to Power Off or hold the Play/Stop button for ~2 seconds. Not every aspect of the OS is complete. There are some options that when selected, a screen pops up saying it is Under Construction.
