Razer Copperhead and Logitech G5: A Tale of Two Gaming MiceLogitech G5 Description: Physically, Logitech's G5 is shaped much like its predecessor, the MX518. The left of the mouse is raised higher than the right, effectively biasing the ergonomics for right hand use. The curved top of the mouse peaks at about the center (lengthwise), where the bottom segment of your fingers generally would lay.
The top shell of the G5 has a non-reflective semi-smooth texture with a "rust" bronze color pattern. This shell runs across the top length of the mouse, splitting at the front to form the two main buttons. The surrounding surface areas (the sides and the very front edge) are black with a light coarse texture.
Between the two main mouse buttons is a standard convex shaped scroll wheel. The curved rim of the wheel sticks out a very generous amount from the mouse. This is nice because as gamers know, scroll wheels are easy to wear down with repetitive use; therefore, Logitech gives you more to wear down. G5's scroll wheel, in addition to its usual functions, also has side scrolling capabilities. This is signified with an arrow on each side of the wheel. Below the scroll wheel are two small round buttons. These buttons, by default, function as DPI switching buttons.
The left side of the G5 has a well defined thumb groove. Above the groove is a single oval button with an orange arrow printed on it (like "play" symbol). Above the button, and a little to the back, is a DPI meter. When the mouse is on, it shows a bar meter representing the current DPI setting.
The bottom of the mouse is curiously shaped like the base of a toddler's shoe. It features three different shaped Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) feet - one big semicircle pad at the top, one slightly smaller pad at the bottom, and one slim oval shaped pad on the right (when viewing the mouse upside down). Directly above the bottom pad is a wide rectangular slot. This slot has a transparent orange border.
One of the most unique features the Logitech G5 has is a very swank weight adjustment system. Included with the G5 is a small rectangular orange cartridge. This cartridge features 8 circular holes. Two sets of weights are included with the mouse, each set features 8 weights. One set features 4.5g black weights while the other set features 1.7g silver weights. The weights come in a nicely cushioned tin case.
How this all works is the orange cartridge can be loaded with up to eight weights. Given that there are two weight amounts to choose from as well as a number of holes you can fill or leave blank, there are a lot of weight combinations that the cartridge can be loaded with. With the cartridge loaded, it can then be slid into the earlier mentioned slot at the bottom of the mouse.
The weight cartridge sits diagonally inside the mouse so in addition to customizing the overall weight of the G5, you can also customize the balance of the mouse. Maybe you like the top of the mouse to have more weight than the bottom or vice versa. Maybe you want the left side of the mouse to be heavier - or the right. The G5's weight cartridge system makes any of these weight setups possible! An eject button is located above the cartridge slot for easy ejection of the cartridge.
Extending out the front end of the G5 is a braided black wire. At the end of the wire is a standard USB plug. An EMI filter is present on the USB plug side of the wire. When the mouse is on, a little "running-man" logo at the top of the DPI meter glows orange. In addition, one of the three squares on the meter lights orange (which one will depend on your current DPI setting). While nothing else on the top of the G5 lights up, the weight cartridge slot at the bottom lights up with two LEDs. When the weight cartridge is inserted, the LEDs cause the cartridge to glow orange.
