Water-cooling for Everyone 2: Titan TWC-A04 and Alphacool Cape Set (cont.)Alphacool Description:
The Alphacool Cape Set, like the asetek waterchill, represents the kit style of water-cooling meaning that the reservoir, radiator, and pump are all separate components. The Cape Plexi set, featured in this review, has the top of the reservoir and waterblock made with plexiglass. The reservoir is cylinder shaped with both inlet and outlet ports on one end and a clear cap on the other. Two clamp holders are included so the reservoir can be placed horizontally.
The Cape water block is a big change from the usual rectangular flat water blocks. The Cape block is cylindrical with ribs on the outer plexiglass top. The top of the copper core is cone shaped with ring indents to increase surface space. Basically, the core absorbs the heat of the CPU and is drowned with refreshing water.
The base of the block features a near perfect finish. A rectangular plexiglass plate with a big circular cutout in the center is used to mount the water block to the CPU. I ordered the Cape Set with the K7 plate but it can also be ordered with a plate for K8 or P4. I am a bit surprised that Alphacool decided to not include all the plates seeing how just about all other water-coolers do.
The Cape Set uses an Alphacool AP900 12V pump, capable of moving 900 liters of water per hour. The pump is not self priming, which means it needs to be at the lowest point of the circulation so water can flow into it.
Keeping with the theme of radiators, this particular configuration of the Cape Set features a dual 120mm (or 240mm) radiator. This long rectangular radiator is capable of mounting two 120mm fans. Unfortunately, only one side of the radiator features mounting holes.
The radiator, like the TWC-A04, is a standard radiator with copper hoses running lengthwise through aluminum fins. The hoses and fins are coated with black paint. Two Papst 4412 F/2GL are included to cool the radiator. These fans run at 1600 RPM putting out 26 dBA of noise.
Incidentally, the Cape Set uses the same hoses as the Cooler Master Aquagate. Out of the three different hoses I have encountered, these are the most transparent and dense, making them hard to pinch. Their density does make them very easy to push into the push-on fittings though.
Speaking of push-on fittings, four pairs are included, three straight pairs and one elbow pair. The reservoir, pump, and waterblock already have the push-on fittings attached while the radiator is left "unfitted" for the user to choose which remaining fittings to attach.
Finally, a 0.5 liter bottle of Tec-Protect-Clear water additive is included. The manual says there is no need to mix the additive with water, but water will be needed to fill the entire system. |
